There can be no argument that the

Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a handsome sedan, but some changes are underway to make the 2013 model more striking. Our spy shooters caught this wagon, which despite having its front end heavily cloaked, gives up at least a few details.
New headlights are hiding beneath all that masking, which will integrate the current model’s separate daytime running lamps. Out back, the taillights will retain the same shape, but get a slightly different look.
Also absent from these photos will be a new design to the rear fenders, as we’re told that Mercedes will be changing the rear doors to remove the “Ponton-style” bulge. The interior will be updated, as well, with some improved safety equipment being added to the E-Class order sheet.

I do like this 2012 BMW X3 xDrive 28i better. It’s not a bad little scooter, though I submit that this car, like other BMWs that I’ve driven, is let down by its run-flat tires, which make it ride too harshly in my opinion and leads to an unrefined feeling. As I said, it’s better than the outgoing model but it isn’t a BMW to me.
The interior of this new car is way better than that of the outgoing car, and even with run-flats, the ride is a little better.
This is a smooth-enough engine, and the transmission is super nice. Power is adequate-no more no less. But to update to the bigger engine the price bumps, and this sucker costs way too much money to begin with. Speaking of price, you have got to be kidding me.
EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: This generation of the X3 is so much better from a ride, driving and comfort level that it’s hard to think they are the same basic vehicle. I would agree with Wes on the run-flats–they are a bad answer to a question few people were asking. And BMW has jumped in with both feet. The compromising ride is simply not worth the benefits, in my mind. Someday, hopefully, run-flats will perform closer to radials when it comes to ride and handling. But they are not yet there, and the price to replace these things is ridiculous.
I do like the eight-speed automatic and, with its programming, it tries to keep the 3.0-liter right in the power sweet spot and does a good job. Acceleration is decent, with enough power to safely pass on two-lanes and to make merging onto the freeway less stressful.
On the inside, the interior is what you would expect from a luxury vehicle. Soft-touch features abound, a nice, thick, leather wrapped steering wheel is a treat and simple, straightforward controls are a delight.
Wes noted the major downside here: the $50,000 price. The base price is a steal, but when you start adding equipment, the total heads to the stratosphere for a car this size. I like the X3, and, in fact, I like it a lot. I could see owning one, actually. But I couldn’t see owning one at this price and with run-flats.

The 2012 Toyota Avalon sedan is more than just the company’s flagship car, it’s a testament to Toyota‘s ability to adapt its product to the uniquely American market.  There are still a lot of people out there who like cars, not SUVs or CUVs or pickups, but cars. And, within that population there are many who like their cars big, plush and carefree. With the exception of the carefree part, this used to be the sole domain of the American automobile industry, with names like Buick Electra and Mercury Grand Marquis leading the way. Today, there are only a few large near-luxury sedans offered, making the Avalon’s job all the easier. With appointments approaching a Lexus level of refinement and comfort, the 2012 Toyota Avalon 4-door sedan can easily handle competition from such heavyweights as the Buick LaCrosse and Chrysler 300.  However, Hyundai’s Genesis might be able to cause the big Toyota some heartburn, with features equaling and in some cases exceeding the Avalon’s at a very competitive price.
Avalon buyers will likely find the car more than exceeds their performance expectations. Steering response and brake feel are strong, but again they do not promote the same type of driving excitement one gets from driving a Chrysler 300C or Ford Taurus SHO. The 2012 Toyota Avalon sedan’s front seats are soft and wide without much in the way of lateral support. In back, the Avalon sedan delivers head and legroom in spades, and features a class-exclusive reclining rear seatback. One caveat: Because the seatbacks don’t fold flat and trunk capacity is a mere 14.7 cubic feet, the Avalon’s cargo-toting skills are relatively modest.

Well, this certainly brings quite literal meaning to the word ‘minivan’. According to Auto Motor und Sport, sources within BMW have reportedly confirmed that a new Mini-branded panel van – possibly dubbed Mini Cargo – will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
Creating the Mini Cargo sounds like a simple enough process. Auto Motor und Sport reports that the work-ready hauler will be based on the Clubman, with the rear bench seat removed in favor of a long load floor. The rear side windows will be ditched for sheetmetal (like most panel vans), though it’s unclear whether or not the rear windows will be left intact.
We’re curious to see what other alterations will be made to the Clubman in its transition to a proper panel van. Will the passenger-side rear-hinged door be left alone, or will it be removed? Will the rear suspension be strengthened to accommodate for heavy hauling? Assuming that plans for a Mini Cargo are indeed underway, we’ll have to wait until March to find out.

The 2006 Azera was the first shot that Hyundai took at going upmarket, a big, soft, front-wheel-drive sedan packed with content and offered at a bargain price compared to the Toyota Avalon and Buick LaCrosse. But today, this Korean import seems more like it comes from the Island of Misfit Toys. Azera has quietly persisted while Hyundai has launched several well-received models, from the Genesis to the 2011 Sonata to the brand-new Veloster. Now comes the Azera’s 15 minutes of fame, in the form of a complete overhaul for 2012 designed to make the Azera more of a premium offering.
The new Azera adopts Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language that we’ve loved on the Sonata, but in this application something went amiss. Everything looks good up front, as the Azera’s Fluidic front fascia looks similarly aggressive. But follow the attractive chrome trim strip back from the headlights and something goes bump in the night. The Azera’s rear quarter panel retains a bulging character line similar to the old model, except that in the new sheet metal the flanks are even more pronounced – and Buick-like. Things get better out back, as the new Azera has an elegant decklid and rear taillights that wouldn’t look out of place on any luxury car.
Underhood, the second-generation Azera gets a new 3.3-liter V6 with direct injection. This “Lambda II” powerplant is good for 293 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, while providing an estimated 20 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway. Hyundai has also fitted the new Azera with its Active Eco mode, which should be good for a five-percent boost in fuel economy, according to the automaker. Like the old Azera, power is fed to the front wheels through a six-speed transaxle.

Standard Azera equipment includes some formerly optional content, like a navigation system with rearview camera, and Hyundai is also equipping Azeras with its Blue Link telematics system. The 2012 Azera goes on sale in February, and while we will admit to being more excited about some of Hyundai’s other launches next year (that’s you, Elantra coupe) we’re certainly not going to complain when we get our opportunity to chew up some comfortable highway miles, Azera style.
